Australia is home to millions of under-hydrated people according to a recent survey conducted by Hydralyte. The study suggests a large portion of Aussies - a whopping 73 per cent - are missing the mark when it comes to daily fluid intake.
But it’s not for lack of trying. Most of us think we’re staying hydrated, but clearly, there’s a gap between perception and reality. This gap isn’t just a footnote in our wellness routines; it has real implications for our daily health and well-being.
Debunking Hydration Myths
Nearly nine in ten Aussies believe water is the fastest way to rehydrate, but there’s more to hydration than just chugging H2O. Rehydration, especially under Australia’s sunny skies, is about replenishing lost electrolytes, which water alone doesn’t provide. Electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, help our bodies absorb fluids effectively, which is why plain water can sometimes feel insufficient, particularly on hot days or after intense exercise.

And then there’s the misconception that rehydration solutions are just for severe dehydration or illness, when in fact staying adequately hydrated should be a part of everyday life. It’s not just a remedy for a pounding headache on a hot day.
The Surprising Symptoms of Dehydration
Not only does hydrating keep thirst at bay, it’s also essential for clear thinking, physical stamina, and even our emotional health. Many Australians are unaware of the wide-ranging symptoms of dehydration. Fatigue, for instance, can sneak up on us during the day, making that 3pm slump worse. Headaches, mental fog, and trouble concentrating are all red flags that we may be running low on fluids.
Interestingly, women, who generally report being more informed about hydration, often experience more symptoms than men, with 66 per cent of women regularly dealing with dehydration headaches, compared to 52 per cent of men. And while men may be more likely to think they’re meeting their hydration needs, they’re less likely to report symptoms — which could mean they’re simply not noticing the effects.

How State and Gender Shape Hydration Habits
Across the country, hydration habits vary. Western Australians top the list of those struggling to stay hydrated, with 80 per cent admitting they don’t meet daily fluid needs regularly. Meanwhile, states like Victoria, NSW, and South Australia aren’t far behind, with over 70 per cent of residents also falling short.
These findings hint at more than just hot weather; they reveal how daily habits, busy schedules, and sometimes a lack of awareness impact our health. The key here is understanding that hydration is a daily habit, vital to our well-being.
Rethinking Our Hydration Strategies
So how can we ensure we’re staying hydrated? While water is essential, options like electrolyte solutions and hydration powders can provide the minerals our bodies need to hold onto fluids better, especially after workouts or long days in the sun. Some choose electrolyte drinks for that extra hydration boost, but alternatives like effervescent tablets or hydration sticks are also compact and easy to carry around.
And forget the days when effervescent tablet flavours were hard to stomach. Now there’s a whole range of refreshing flavours from Hydralyte to choose from including Orange, Colour Free Lemonade, Apple Blackcurrant, Lemon Lime, Strawberry Kiwi, Tropical, Passionfruit Punch, Peach Crush, Watermelon Burst and Pineapple Breeze (exclusive to Chemist Warehouse).
For families, hydration ice blocks can make staying hydrated a fun part of the day, especially for kids on the go.
