Astro, a contemporary Asian BBQ eatery drawing inspiration from Tokyo’s izakayas and Seoul’s barbecue scene, has hit The Streets of Barangaroo. Located in the former SOOT spot, Astro invites guests to experience casual lunch or dinner dining, reminiscent of izakaya culture – accentuated by lively Japanese 80s ‘City Pop’ music.

This venture marks the latest addition to David Bae and Kolture Group’s portfolio, following the success of their previous establishment, Matkim. The name ‘Astro’ pays homage to Astro Boy, an iconic manga-inspired anime that brought Bae joy in his younger years.

Under the culinary direction of executive chef Jacob Lee, renowned for his successes at Matkim, Astro shifts gears from fine dining to a semi-casual approach. The lunch menu spotlights donburi bowls, each accompanied by onsen tamago (soft-cooked egg) and soy broth.

Diners can indulge in a variety of options, including mouth-watering and very tender Gyutan (BBQ beef tongue with Japanese green onion sauce), miso salmon, gochujang pork, wagyu brisket, pork katsu, unagi (eel), vegetarian choices, and a decadent wagyu Tsukune don.

Highlights from the opening menu include, Sydney Rock Oysters with lime, white soy mignonette; Ora King Salmon with yuja wasabi and cucumber sobagi; grilled mochi with brown butter doenjang and La-yu chilli oil; a truffle bulgogi sando; wagyu hanger steak claypot with garlic butter rice; and kingfish collar with yuzu pepper ponzu and mizuna. The eggplant chips with truffle aioli, nori and parmigiano is highly recommended.
