Nestled in the picturesque Byron Bay, on the serene Bundjalung Country, lies Basq House, a new 32-room boutique hotel that promises privacy and tranquillity right in the heart of Byron’s bustling village centre. This boutique hideaway offers guests a unique blend of peaceful seclusion and vibrant local culture, making it the perfect spot to explore the stunning hinterland, the lively restaurant scene, and the famous beach culture.
A Personal Touch with a Homely Feel
Developed by Melbourne-based friends Matt Walsh and Shane Wilkinson, Basq House was created to be a home-away-from-home. They envisioned a place that feels like staying at a friend's house, complete with personal touches and a warm atmosphere. They enlisted Matt Dalby of StudioFAB to design the property and local interior designer Léo Terrando to style the interiors.
A Design Inspired by Moroccan Riads
The hotel’s design, inspired by the grandeur of Moroccan riads, features rooms overlooking a central temperature-controlled magnesium pool, creating a contemporary sanctuary for guests. The indoor-outdoor aesthetic is prominent throughout the property. The reception area, adorned with artwork by Byron Bay artist Damian Bisogni, woven pendant lights from Tigmi Trading, and unique ceramics and objets d'art, doubles as a bar where guests can relax with a Coconut Margarita or Negroni.
Warm, Inviting Communal Spaces
The speakeasy-style Lounge Room, with furnishings from Bodhi Living and bespoke rugs from local brand Pampa, exudes warmth and charm. Original artworks decorate the walls, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich artistic heritage. The intimate library features whimsical Brazilian Rainforest artwork, South African carved wooden masks, and floor-to-ceiling bookcases filled with an eclectic collection of books. Cosy leather sofas and a large open fireplace make it a perfect retreat in cooler months.

A Testament to Artistic Expression
Basq House’s design philosophy intertwines cultural influences and artistic expression. The bold, fluid forms of Fauvism and a Bohemian spirit create a space that speaks to the soul. The result is a visual tapestry of influences and eras, evoking a sense of wonder and exploration.
Designed for Connection and Relaxation
The communal spaces at Basq House are designed to encourage interaction and connection among guests. These areas are perfect for socialising, eating, drinking, and playing, with bar snacks, pre-batched cocktails from Maybe Sammy, and a selection of board games. The bedrooms, designed with minimalist style and a soothing colour palette, offer HD TVs with Chromecast, Mr Smith toiletries, and a minibar stocked with local products.
An Oasis of Calm
The landscaped greenery frames the central pool area, which features sun-drenched daybeds and cabanas, offering guests another oasis of calm. The magnesium pool is perfect for relieving stress and soothing sore muscles, inviting guests to relax and bask in the sun.

Prime Location and Wellness Focus
Located just moments from Main and Clarkes Beach and a short distance from Wategos Beach and Cape Byron walking track, Basq House allows guests to soak up the region’s natural beauty and slow rhythm. There's no shortage of options, with local favourites like Light Years, Bar Heather, Loft, Pixie Food & Wine, and Lovers Lane just steps away. The hotel’s rooftop retreat offers zones for yoga and meditation, and guests have access to a Bathhouse and Wellness Centre with infrared saunas and ice plunges.

Guests can use the hotel’s Lekker push bikes, beach shades, surfboards, and guest share vehicles for exploring nearby towns. Secure basement parking is also available.
