Two Italian favourites have just landed in Mudgee with the release of First Ridge Wines’ 2023 Montepulciano and Barbera. Grown in the vineyard’s elevated slopes and shaped by an exceptional season, these new vintages capture the bold character and elegance of classic Italian varieties.
The 2023 harvest was delivered under near-perfect growing conditions. With little rain, mild temperatures and a slow ripening process, the fruit developed exceptional colour and tannin structure, though the pick came later than usual. The result is two wines that balance richness with finesse, highlighting the character of the site.

First Ridge has long championed Italian varieties in the Mudgee region. The vineyard grows Montepulciano and Barbera alongside other Italian favourites such as Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Vermentino, Prosecco and Fiano. The team credits the early guidance of viticultural expert Dr Richard Smart, who helped shape the vineyard’s direction, building on work started in the 1970s by pioneer Carlo Carino.

Both new releases were made to showcase the purity of the fruit. The grapes were cold-soaked for 48 hours before fermentation at moderate temperatures, with twice-daily pump-overs to extract depth and colour. This minimal-intervention approach allows the natural expression of the varieties to shine through.
The 2023 Barbera opens with lively aromas of spiced berries, leading to a palate rich in dark plum and subtle layers of spice. Hints of vanillin oak add warmth, while bright acidity and gentle tannins keep the wine fresh and balanced. The 2023 Montepulciano, on the other hand, greets the senses with ripe dark cherries and mulberries with a whisper of exotic spice.
Wine lovers can find the 2023 Barbera and Montepulciano through select NSW venues and nationally via First Ridge’s website. Each retails for $45, and those keen to explore more can join the Prima Cresta Wine Club for access to future releases.
