The Grumpy Baker is making a bold move with its latest venture – a stylish new venue in Potts Point that blends its signature baked goods with a full cafe menu, an evening bar, and a Middle Eastern-inspired dinner offering.
Co-founder Michael Cthurmer has completely revamped the former Macleay Street Bistro site into the new Grumpy Baker & Bar, converting the space into a warm, inviting setting with textured walls, handmade tiles, and tan leather banquette seating. It's the perfect spot for daytime coffee runs and intimate evening gatherings.

The Grumpy Baker has built a reputation for expertly crafting breads, buttery pastries, and hearty pies, but its Potts Point outpost takes things further. From 7 am, customers can expect a generous daytime menu with dishes such as shakshuka, challah French toast, and Turkish bourekas, while lunchtime sees comforting classics like chicken schnitzel in challah with pickled cabbage and Romanian salad. The team bakes everything fresh on-site throughout the day, ensuring top quality and flavour.

Come evening, the space transforms into a neighbourhood bar and eatery, celebrating the robust, fragrant flavours of the Middle East, with warm challah with harissa butter, roasted eggplant with tahini, spiced Moroccan fish, and grilled meats - all made from scratch in-house. There is also a thoughtfully curated wine list to complement the menu, focusing on small Australian producers, while cocktails take a creative spin with ingredients like pomegranate, rosewater, and lemon.
“We’re so excited to bring the Grumpy Baker experience to Potts Point,” says Cthurmer. “This location is particularly special as it allows us to share the rustic food I grew up with, alongside our freshly baked goods, in a warm and inviting setting.”
