Guide Dogs NSW has welcomed its latest winter litter, and these adorable pups need dedicated volunteers to help them grow and learn over the next year. These volunteers, known as Puppy Raisers, play a crucial role in the early development of future Guide Dogs.

Puppy Raisers are everyday heroes who provide a loving home and basic training to young puppies. They help the puppies become well-socialised and confident before they begin formal Guide Dog training at around 12 months old. This volunteer role is affectionately dubbed one of Australia’s most "labradorable" opportunities. It involves establishing good habits like toileting, feeding, sleeping, and walking routines.

What's involved?

Each week, Puppy Raisers attend training sessions where the pups learn essential skills such as sitting calmly for grooming, walking nicely on a lead. They also learn to develop good house manners. These foundational skills are vital for their future roles in providing independence and freedom to individuals who are blind or have low vision.

To become a Puppy Raiser, you’ll need a fully fenced yard and access to a car. You'll also need to be home for most of the day (away no longer than four hours). You must also attend information sessions, vet checks, and Puppy Pre-School.

Will it cost anything?

Guide Dogs NSW supports Puppy Raisers with food, veterinary care, flea and tick prevention, and guidance from a dedicated Puppy Development Adviser. This comprehensive support system ensures that both you and the puppy have the resources needed for success.

Raising a Guide Dog is a significant commitment. It takes over two years and costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, and train each dog. Yet, all services are provided at no cost to those who need them, thanks to the dedication of volunteers and donors.
