IFTAR, the brainchild of Jeremy Agha, is a new Middle Eastern restaurant opening in Merrylands, featuring traditional flavours with contemporary flair.
IFTAR, meaning 'break-fast' in Arabic, encapsulates the joy of sharing food with loved ones. But for Agha, the name holds a deeper resonance. It’s a tribute to his mother, Rita, whose cherished recipes inspire much of the menu. “IFTAR can’t be spelt without the letters of her name – there’s no IFTAR without Mum. It’s as much her story as it is mine,” says Agha. This heartfelt connection is woven into every aspect of the restaurant.

The menu is designed to celebrate the communal spirit of Middle Eastern dining, with a selection of small plates and mains perfect for sharing. From the richly spiced batata harra to the crowd-pleasing lamb shawarma tacos and the smoky eggplant fatteh, every dish offers a taste of tradition with a modern edge. The standout? We’ve been advised it’s the woodfired sourdough bread, baked from a family recipe passed down through generations. It’s a must-have centrepiece that ties the menu together.

Agha’s culinary roots run deep. Having grown up in his family’s Lebanese bakery, he’s spent years honing his craft and cherishing the values of food, family, and community. At IFTAR, he seamlessly blends those foundations with fresh, forward-thinking techniques, creating a space where heritage and innovation coexist harmoniously.
The experience extends beyond the food. Acclaimed interior architect Matt Woods has crafted a setting that aligns with the menu’s ethos – timeless yet contemporary. With travertine floors, textured clay walls, and warm accents of brass and timber, the design evokes the essence of the Middle East while remaining sleek and inviting.
