It’s May the Fourth, also known as Star Wars Day, so here’s a little travel trivia for Star Wars fans that might inspire a trip to the stunning Persian Gulf, as Abu Dhabi was the iconic film location for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Travellers don’t need to leave Earth’s atmosphere and go to the far reaches of the Star Wars galaxy to find the dramatic rolling dunes and endless ethereal plains of the planet Jakku. They just need to visit Abu Dhabi!

The Martian-red sand dunes of Rub al Khali or Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter in Liwa, are (literally) out of this world. They are the stuff of fantasies, which is precisely why “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was shot here in 2014.

Director J.J. Abrams and nearly 800 cast and crew spent six months filming in the uninterrupted desert, which covers 650,000 square kilometres, making it larger than the country of France, and the perfect setting for one of the world’s biggest film franchises.

One of the highlights is that travellers and fans have many ways to enjoy the location, such as riding camels, camping, sandboarding, and 4WD off-roading.
