Opera Australia has revealed soprano and cabaret artist Ali McGregor, along with Adam Hills – comedian and TV presenter – will be the hosts for this year’s New Year’s Eve Opera Gala at the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall.
The Opera Gala promises to be a vibrant exploration of the opera world, infused with an unmistakable Australian essence, right in the heart of Sydney’s renowned New Year’s Eve festivities.
The talented cast includes tenor Diego Torre, sopranos Julie-Lea Goodwin and Sophie Salvesani, and baritone Luke Gabbedy. They will be accompanied by the Opera Australia Orchestra, under the baton of Tahu Matheson, the Head of Music at Opera Australia.
Ali McGregor, known for her role as a principal soprano with Opera Australia, has since carved out a successful career as an acclaimed cabaret performer, gracing renowned stages from Glastonbury to Carnegie Hall. She has also established her own company, FLUXUS, dedicated to nurturing the growth of new Australian operas.
A five-time Gold Logie nominee, Adam Hills is one of Australia’s best-known comedians. He is adored across Australia for his iconic role as host of ABC TV’s music-orientated quiz show Spicks and Specks and for tv shows, Adam Hills Tonight and The Last Leg, his talk show on the UK’s Channel 4.
The Gala marks the first time the couple have hosted together, promising an evening of beloved opera classics, sung by some of Opera Australia’s favourite principal artists, with plenty of laughs and surprises along the way.
