Australian-owned book retailer QBD Books has revealed its 2023 Books of the Year as bibliophiles across the country consider their holiday shopping. Launched in 2017, the Books of the Year are selected by QBD’s team of literary enthusiasts and buyers who carefully evaluate numerous books. The winners are categorised into fiction, non-fiction, and children’s genres.
In the fiction category, the award goes to Trent Dalton’s novel Lola in the Mirror, an international bestseller that tells the story of a girl evading the police, combining suspense, crime, coming-of-age, and teenage romance. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life clinches the non-fiction category, offering insights as a self-help book and memoir by the Hollywood veteran. The children’s book category is won by Kiyash Monsef’s Once There Was, a New York Times bestselling work that explores a world of fantastic beasts and heroes.
Nick Croydon, QBD Books’ CEO, details the selection process for the Books of the Year. He explains that each month they feature a Book of the Month, emphasising debut or new authors with outstanding works. While these titles often climb the Bookscan chart due to increased sales during the promotional month, the Books of the Year are chosen based on the entire calendar year. These winning titles, not necessarily featured as Book of the Month, are selected for their strong sales or resonance with readers and are highlighted throughout December.
Trent Dalton expresses his gratitude for receiving the Fiction Book of the Year award, considering it a remarkable honour, especially for Australian authors. To celebrate, QBD Books will offer customers an exclusive cover for Lola in the Mirror, available both in-store and online.
Karen-Maree Griffiths, sales director at HarperCollins Australia, the publishers of Lola in the Mirror acknowledges the significant boost that QBD’s Book of the Month can provide to authors.
“This program not only promotes their works but also provides a national platform across Australia, celebrating and elevating authors across the literary world.”
