Did you know, staying hydrated during the cooler months is just as important as staying hydrated when it’s warm ? While your skin might not be sweaty, your body’s still quietly losing water through your breath, skin, and even during that morning power walk.

We tend to associate dehydration with heatwaves and sunburn, but the effects of not getting enough fluid in winter can be just as serious. For example, not staying hydrated can increase the risk of constipation, urinary tract infections and kidney stones.

Your body is mostly water (between 50 to 75 per cent), depending on age and body composition. Every cell, tissue and organ relies on water to function. It keeps your blood flowing, helps flush out waste, cushions your joints, regulates temperature, and keeps things moving in the digestion department.

Admittedly, drinking plain water all day can feel like a chore, especially when your body’s craving soup, tea and comfort food in the cooler months. That’s where a little flavour and variety can make all the difference.

Ideally, we should be aiming for 2.1 litres (about 8 cups) a day for women, and 2.6 litres for men.  This does include all fluids, not just water, so that cup of tea counts. As does soup. It even includes the water in your veggies. But you should still aim to take in fluids that hydrate, not dehydrate (such as coffee, soz!).

This is where Hydralyte products can make things easier to stay hydrated, even on the coldest days. If you need perking up, try the new Pineapple Breeze Effervescent Electrolyte Tablets. Drop one in a glass of water and you’ve got a tropical hit that gives your body what it needs without the sugar overload of juice or soft drinks. If you have a soda maker at home, you could even add your tablets to plain carbonated water to spruce it up a bit.

For those looking to cool down after a gym or running session, check out the Watermelon Ice Blocks, packed with electrolytes and flavour to keep things interesting. Electrolyte Powder Sachets are also handy to throw in your bag for those times you need a hydration hit.
