Sydney’s coffee culture has long been a point of pride, but now it has global recognition to back it up. Toby’s Estate’s flagship café and roastery in Chippendale was named The World’s Best Coffee Shop at the inaugural The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops Gala at CoffeeFest Madrid in Spain.
This new global ranking system assessed coffee shops worldwide based on their coffee quality, barista expertise, customer service, innovation, ambience, sustainability, and food offerings. Toby’s Estate emerged victorious, cementing its status as a leader in specialty coffee.

Our whole team puts in an immense amount of effort to make the best coffee possible, so we’re absolutely delighted to be awarded this incredible recognition,” says Jody Leslie, Toby Estate’s General Manager.
Australia’s reputation as a coffee powerhouse was further reinforced, with Proud Mary in Melbourne securing fourth place and Brisbane’s Coffee Anthology coming in eighth. In total, nine Australian cafés earned a spot on the prestigious list.
For over 25 years, Toby’s Estate has been at the forefront of specialty coffee, with a presence not just in Australia but across Singapore, Indonesia, the Middle East, and the Philippines. Most recently, they opened a new flagship café in Fitzroy, Melbourne.
The island brew bar at the Chippendale café invites coffee lovers to engage with baristas, ask questions, and witness the craft behind their cups. Overhead mirrors provide a unique vantage point, making every pour and extraction part of the spectacle.
Behind glass doors, the roastery hums with activity, offering a glimpse into the meticulous process of crafting espresso blends, single origins, and limited-edition releases. For those after a bite, the café also serves up toasties, baguettes, pastries, and sweet treats.
Toby’s Estate’s win is a nod to Australia’s enduring love affair with coffee—and a reminder that some of the best brews in the world can be found right here in Sydney.
